One might think that landscape photographers are favored souls who spend all their days pursuing beauty out-of-doors but most photographers actually spend most of their time working indoors cataloguing, testing, processing, printing etc. This page highlights some of my images that are currently getting that treatment.

#1:  Sandstone Fin, Backlight

This is an image taken last October in a remote area in northern Arizona.

The luminous sandstone fin is about 24" long and 4" high and the remarkable thing is that it is only about 1/8" deep, thin enough to allow sunlight to pass through the stone.

This is a difficult image to express because of the high key values. I'm working to emphasize the fin and reduce the brightness of the background without losing the  impact of the brilliant sunlight.

As to the place, it is a sandstone sea of compacted ancient sand dunes and it stretches out for miles. Much of the exposed and weathered sandstone is incredibly delicate.  Sometimes it is difficult (or even impossible) to find a place to stand without risking trampling and breaking some vulnerable feature underfoot, so some photographs must go untaken. The BLM has a permit program to enforce limited access to the most sensitive areas. Interestingly, photographers make up a significant  portion of the visitation to these areas, so we bear a particular obligation for their conservation (see Grand Staircase Escalante Partners, a non-profit group that supports conservation of the area at
